Feb 11, 2017: The members of Sacred Heart Ward decided to visit ‘Sneha Sadan’, a home for the HIV positive. Mr. Leslie D’Souza and family, being the patrons of this home, had pre-planned this visit as they usually do and invited other members of the ward as well, to join them. Our ward Leader, Ms. Grace Lasrado also joined us. The group with 11 members left on 27th January, 2017 at 4.20 p.m. in two cars. This home is located on the outskirts of the city, in Gurpura. As we were approaching this place, we were fascinated to see the beauty and greenery around the institution with a play area for the kids.
Rev. Fr Jeji and Rev. Fr Russel, who are in charge of the administration, gave us a hearty welcome. This home houses around 80 persons – children and few adults. Mr. Leslie D’Souza presented them medicines worth Rupees ten thousand, food worth Rupees nine thousand, while the ward members presented grocery items etc. worth Rupees three thousand. Fr Russel, then took us around the home, briefly explaining the daily chores of the inmates, healthy food served, the education imparted, the medical treatment provided and so on. Rev. Father also provided us with inputs like the management issues, financial assistance received and the like. We were stunned to see the umpteen number of trophies, cups, shields, certificates etc. that were displayed, which was definitely showcasing the potential and the hidden talents of the children, which otherwise could have never been explored.
Fr Russel stated in clear words that their mission was to give these children a safe and secure environment with a sense of belongingness and to live a life free from guilt and neglect. We were indeed amazed to see the lively, vibrant and cheerful nature of these kids, just like the normal kids. Definitely the priests, volunteers and doctors need to be lauded for tending to these little ones with utmost love, care and support.
Another interesting thing we heard from the director was that every day the inmates, regardless of their caste or creed, assemble in the chapel and pray to God with devotion. We also came across an abandoned girl child, which was rescued by the Women and Child Welfare Department and was under the care of this home. It was a heart-rending scene though!
Rev. Fr Jeji and Rev. Fr Russel thanked all of us for our time and generosity. The visit to this lovely home was a very fulfilling experience with memories and valuable lessons for all of us. It has no doubt, instilled in us a sense of positivity and compassion and taught us to value life and thank God for the abundant graces He has bestowed on all of us.
